The Ultimate Playlist To Listen During Home Quarantine

Ever imagined that the year 2020 would begin with a series of unfortunate events like the COVID-19? None of us would’ve thought that a virus can affect our lives so drastically. It’s been more than 3 weeks since we’re indoors, and I have to admit that in these testing times, music is something that I’ve enjoyed every bit and has kept me from going insane. I also have a T-shirt with a slogan “Music is in my blood”. And I quite agree with it without a doubt. If it wasn’t for content manager, I think I would’ve been DJing Live on social media just like the rest of the DJs. Anyway, here’s a playlist that is centered around the theme home. Hope you love it. Do share in the comments if you have more songs to suggest. 🙂

Humanity in Insanity

-By Crystal Andrade

Humans created religion, Humans created caste; they thought that it will give them peace
But, it only made them into piece.
Humans created boundaries, Humans created countries; they thought they will be united
But, it only made them divided.
Humans created penny, Humans created money; they thought that it will buy them happiness
But, it only brought them suffering and sadness.
Humans created bombs, Humans created technology; they thought that life will be easy
But, it has made them lazy.
Humans made junk food, Humans made fast food; they thought that they will end hunger
But, it only made them wonder how the diseases became more in number.
Humans made fags, Humans made liquor; they thought that it will make them go high
But, it only made them addicted and die too early to say goodbye.
Humans made love, Humans made babies; they thought their kids will grow up to be them
But, they only grew up to condemn their own with mayhem.
Humans make, create and invent everything but, they know not that they harm their own.

Oh, how much you give me joy!

When I look at you I feel love and coy.

You give me goosebumps at all hours.

Your beauty has blinded the stars.

I could fly just to reach you high,

because you always belong to that beautiful sky.

Life is Short!

What is that comes in different colours, is very pleasing to the eye of a beholder or makes every person looking at it feel happy? Any guesses? Well, the answer is a “flower”. From the rusty ancient times, set at the genesis of civilizations, the sight and fragrance of flowers have invariably had a profound soothing effect on the minds of the beholders. Many poems have been penned on, and numerous verses have been dedicated to the matchless beauty and pristine elegance of flowers in full bloom. A land stretched out with blooming daffodils led the romantic poet William Wordsworth to compose one of the most memorable lyrics of all time- ‘The Daffodils’. It is a fine example of his love for nature. The poet had once enjoyed the scenic beauty of the daffodils. It left such an indelible impression on his mind, that he could remember the scene vividly even after a lapse of several years.

No matter how impressive a person is, it is natural for him to get intoxicated on the whiff of the fresh fragrance of flowers. One gets into a reverie on the vision of a large field of colourful flowers. When we gaze at a flower, whether a rose, sunflower or lilies, we are lost in thoughts, as to say we feel it is a wonderful miracle to have such marvellous entity. Each kind of flower has its own identity. To ponder on the colour of the flower, makes us speechless because this is what makes a flower superior to all other beings.

When it comes to flowers, its benefits are numerous. In India, people are accustomed to flowers as it is a daily routine to begin the day by praying to God and offering flowers at his image as a symbol of respect. This shows that flowers work like mediator between God and people.  What’s more, traditional Indian women decorate their hair with flowers as a sign of beauty and for fragrance.  We also find heavy weighted garlands with beautiful flowers arraying the neck of our politicians. Even Hawaii and other tourist places welcome its visitors with a garland of flowers. We find them also around the necks of icons and celebrities. Additionally, a foreigner is welcomed to a country with a garland of dazzling flowers.

Furthermore, flowers are used as a remark of love and affection to our dear ones on their birthdays, weddings, and anniversaries. A bouquet adds more beauty to a bride when it is held in her hands. But don’t forget, flowers are also decorated at the tombs or placed at the funeral pyre of a deceased person. They are also given to people who are ill to get well soon. This shows that man is associated with a flower from birth till death.

Even flowers have their exits and entrances. Once you see them fully bloomed in a vast garden and the next moment they meet their fate. This is because man crops it for his own selfish purposes and recreation. If not for this, their fate ends in their birthplace itself, as they fade and lose the petals which are its clothing. This reminds us of the scriptures, as it says, “And why worry about clothes? Look how the wild flowers grow, they do not work or make clothes for themselves. But I tell you that not even King Solomon with all his wealth has clothes as beautiful as one of these flowers” (Math. 6.28-29). This is not all, flowers are used for making perfumes, soaps and oil. Flowering plants in colourful pots can bring welcome colour into homes.

Today, we find that natural flowers are replaced with artificial ones and this does spare the life of a real one. We do find people using floral designs in print, in jewellery, on dresses, on books and greeting cards so that it gives us a pleasant feeling. We also find artificial flowers which are used for decorating our homes. But, they don’t provide any smell that will mesmerize us, and moreover, they will not resemble the real ones. But one thing is for sure, it will save the life of a real flower.

There is a lot of difference between a real and an artificial flower because for an artificial one, no insects like butterflies and bees will attract it nor will it give fragrance. But when it comes to sparing the life of a real one, artificial are the best.

In all, we should be grateful to our creator for giving us this beautiful gift. Since a flower’s life is transient, we should appreciate it for its little time on earth. Instead it is plucked by man and used for his needs and thrown away. Do remember that a flower gives happiness and joy to one but, a garden of flowers gives joy to everyone. Let it be a plant and flower of light to its beholder. How man lives is more important than how long he lives. Therefore, it doesn’t matter how long a flower survives because it is bound to mortality, but what matters is that to how many lives it has changed or spread happiness to.

Beauty- Boon or Bane!

We have certainly heard the common saying “Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder”. It is obvious that a beautiful object is certainly pleasing to the eye. It cannot think or feel and its sole beneficiary is the beholder. But what about beauty when it is applied to human beings, especially women? Those females who are blessed with good looks are indeed considered lucky. They do not have to work hard to get what they want. It’s just a piece of cake for them.

Most men want to marry beautiful women. Just go through the matrimonial ads which appears in both newspapers and magazines and you’ll find that beauty and fair complexion are given prime importance. Why not ban matrimonial advertisements asking for “fair-complexioned” brides and bridegrooms? The youth of today have a very unrealistic concept of marriage and ideal partners. They seem to have a lot of expectations and inclinations about their going-to-be-partners or future mates. But are the qualities desired by men that are so important in marriage, possessed by most beautiful women and vice versa?

In fairy tales we certainly are exposed to the fact that the princess is always beautiful and besides, she is also gentle, modest and self-sacrificing. And when she marries the handsome prince they live “happily ever after”. What is true of fairy tales is also true of the movies. The actress is always charming and beautiful and along with her physical endowments she has all the other desirable qualities, such as humility and a sense of devotion. She may be ill-treated and tortured by society. In the end, justice prevails and her selfless love for her man triumphs. But movies are just movies. When it comes to media, we are absolutely convinced that what they depict is fictitious. Ultimately, people are disillusioned and are misled into thinking that the ideal heroine depicted therein can be a reality in practical life. People who find themselves the centre of attention because of their looks are sooner or later likely to develop an inflated ego. Beauty is given so much of importance in the media that it is sure to affect any woman who has the physical qualities that are supposed to count. Beauty is given prime importance in various beauty contests and short-lived careers like modelling, air-stewardess and acting. Other than this, you don’t find people giving as great an importance to beauty.

What is more, there is a tendency of equating beauty with complexion. Why do people associate white skin or fair complexion with beauty? Then what about the concept of “Black beauty”? There are so many black people or dark complexioned people who have set out on high goals and achieved a lot and have become successful in life!

Even the white-dominated western world has changed its outlook towards beauty, where girls of African origin are often selected as winners of the beauty pageant. Even today we find colour discrimination or racism still operative in India and other countries.

We know that Gandhi has his lessons on freedom struggle from South Africa where he fought for the removal of racial discrimination against the blacks and the browns by the whites!

To the whites, all Indians maybe blacks, but in India, there is a big divide between the whites and the blacks or in other words, the Aryans and the Dravidians. In this respect, Indians are more colour-conscious than the whites. Rebuking someone by pointing to his/her colour should be made a punishable crime just as insulting one by referring to his caste. Rejecting a girl for her colour is as unjust as rejecting her for inadequate dowry.

Why don’t people realize that each race has a particular skin colour in order to adapt to the kind of geographical condition and weather. Instead, people have preference for a particular skin colour which only leads to deception. Most of us take beauty to be an asset for a woman. But is it always so? Like all other things, good looks too have got its darker side. Women with average looks are likely to have a much more pleasing personality than a ‘beauty’. She takes the trouble to develop her natural abilities and she uses her talents, skills and intelligent to the full, as she is not preoccupied with her looks. As a wife and mother, she is also more likely to be successful than a ‘beauty’.

Instead of associating beauty with colour, people should realize that, after all, the blood that runs in through our veins is of the same colour irrespective of religion, caste and sex. Money can’t buy you beauty or the colour you prefer. We should be self-contented about the way we look. After all, we can’t change what is been inherited. If everybody was beautiful and fair, then there would be no discrimination and no more advertisements on ‘look fairer or beautiful’. Such ads only make people insecure and steal away their confidence. No matter what your skin colour is, beauty shouldn’t be judged based on the colour. Remember, even black hens lay white eggs. If only people can change their attitude towards beauty, there won’t be such intricate problems. After all, beauty is not everything. Let us remember that, “As we grow old, beauty steals inward”. Ultimately, I would like to say that every person in this world is beautiful in one way or the other.

Beautiful or ugly- it is the very human beings who have created this concept. Finally, I would like to conclude by quoting the words of Mahatma Gandhi, “You must be the change you wish to see in the world”.

10 Ways to Enhance Memory for Children!

By Crystal Maria Andrade,

You may wonder how you manage to remember information for a test. Parents often worry how well their children are learning and whether schools are meeting educational standards. Parents and teachers have big dreams that their children and students should become successful in their life. But, whether you succeed or not, all depends on this one aspect: your mind.  Your mind matters and what matters more is your memory. Memory has three stages which include sensory information (replica of what you see and hear/ also called encoding), short-term memory (active/working memory also called storage) and long-term memory (permanent memory/retrieval). Learning is the outcome of memory and learning depends on how well you have processed the information. As ability to recall information is needed for students, the information they learn should be passed on from the short term memory to long term memory in order to retain information during exams, tests or whenever required.

Here are some tips for learning that will enhance your ability to recall information and achieve excellent results:

How much is too much:  There’s a need to understand the span of attention of students and their capacity to store information in their working memory. It is not educationally sound to impose on the students huge amount of information for long period of time, this will leave them confused and clueless. Instead, giving them limited information for study and helping them to learn with vigour will aid in retaining the information for a longer period of time.

1. Adding Emotion: Anything taught with the element of emotion will be easily retained in our memory. This means students are likely to recall information that induces an emotional response. Teachers can use this tactic in English, History and Science classes. For example: if the lesson is on galaxy, the teacher can induce emotions in the students by showing them videos or pictures of the galaxy and stars.

2. Reading, writing and recollecting: Anything which is read out loudly will enhance your retention than just reading it. Writing down the important points or facts will help in retention and will be useful while studying for exams. Recollecting is the ability to retain the information after reading and writing. If you have encoded the information efficiently then you will be able to retrieve the information.

4. Rehearsal: It is said ‘Practice makes a man perfect’, therefore, rehearsing information till you master any concept is very important. Rehearsal improves your memory and gets etched onto your long-term memory. Also, rehearsing the right information is essential because unlearning the inaccurate information which is passed on to the long-term memory will be a challenging task. Hence, practice over time and ace your exams without cramming all information in one night.

5. Give meaning: If there is any subject which has many names, dates and figures; then it is always better to associate these facts with something. Giving meaning to meaningless concepts or information through ways such as poems, mnemonics, music and rhythm will improve retention of this information for future use. Nevertheless, you can use an aid such as chunking which plays a significant role in enhancing the short term memory transfer to long term memory. Chunking numbers, colours or aspects in groups helps in remembering and learning the concepts faster.

6. Make connections: It is vital to make connections or associations between the new information and the previously learnt information. The higher the number of associations made, the more chances of retaining that information easily and this in turn induces your memory power through which you can retrace the information easily.

7. Avoid distractions: While studying, choose a quiet and peaceful environment, comfortable seating and table, bright light, proper ventilation and avoid distracting things around you. Here, distracting elements include anything that diverts your attention, for instance: video games, T.V., music player, phones, and the like. While studying, if distraction persists then encoding the information suffers leading to forgetting. Hence, for encoding to be efficient you shouldn’t give ways to distraction instead concentrate and give maximum attention to avoid the inability to retrieve information.

8. Get some rest: Take a break between learnings. You have heard that ‘All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy’, so take breaks after few hours of studying and relax your mind. Not only breaks but physical exercise and sound sleep strengthens your ability to retain the information. Sleep is very crucial to boost your memory. Sleep helps us learn new information and pass the information to the long-term memory. However, for most of the problems including imbalance of mind and body, stress, preparing for exams- the best prescription commonly given is get some sleep! So, say goodbye to cramming all night.

9. Teach others to help you revise better: Whatever you have learnt will be useful when you share that knowledge to another person. So, one of the best ways to learn is to teach what you’ve learnt to another person. This is the reason why teachers have mastered the concepts they teach because they have to teach the same lessons and concepts to many batches in school. Adding to this, if the concepts are thought using real life stories and examples or experiments, then the students are likely to remember them for life because anything visual stimulates our attention and learning takes place faster.

10. Questioning enhances learning: Asking questions like why, how, what helps in learning concepts well because here the reasoning, thinking and analysis is involved. Anything which triggers our mental processors helps in learning the concepts faster and better. Finding answers to these questions makes memory work out as all the mental processors are involved making the memory charged and active. Besides, another way to ask question is by taking the quizzes or tests which will help in reasoning and in a way enhance your memory power. Here, the end process will be getting feedback from the tests which plays a vital role in knowing what is right and what is wrong. All this collectively heightens your memory power because your brain is at its maximum functionality.

These are the 10 ways which will help you learn efficiently and remember information so that they can be retrieved whenever in need. If these procedures are followed anyone can learn anything quickly and retrace the information efficiently. However, all these procedures have to be followed in a systematic way and one shouldn’t end up multi-tasking. The reason is because our brain processes and stores the information systematically. This is not practiced then certain glitches can occur in the process of learning which will lead to forgetting. Now, you know that the old myths of rote learning don’t work. These guidelines will help students as it will help them reason and learn using the above methods which will have a great impact on the way they can retrieve information whenever asked for. Therefore, retention depends on how well you make use of these sure-fire ways to become more effective learner by simply enhancing your memory power for excellent results. Ultimately, don’t forget that remembering is a skill that takes lot of practice and learning is a life-long process and has to go on for our existence on earth. So, happy learning as memory is like a computer, you need to press Ctrl + S (Save) for all important information, press Backspace for all irrelevant information and press Delete for unused/useless information. Now F5 (Refresh) your mind and practice these useful methods.

Secrets of Learning!

You may be curious as to know how humans learn. The ability to create new memories, store them for a longer period of time and recall them when they are needed is something marvelous about human memory. But, how parents and teachers think about learning taking place in children is erroneous. Let’s look at what memory has in store for us.

Learning is a continuous process which lasts life-long in humans. It begins right when the baby is in the womb till we die. There has been lot of research done as to how learning takes place in humans. Today, we find parents worrying that their children do not do well in their studies and some children find it difficult to grasp concepts and lag behind while others are fast learners and get bored or impatient as they learn quite faster than the others and don’t fit into their peer groups. Why do you think this happens? Do we not know that each individual differs from the other even in terms of learning and memory?

Learning is different for each individual because we learn in different places and situations. Learning depends on whether it is formal or informal. People learn through different ways like touch, auditory, visual, behavior, attention, rote memorization, observing, and perceptions and so on. Moreover, we learn through variety of formats like multimedia, books, lectures and the like. Our learning is influenced by our culture, family, social status, genetic traits, developmental ability and age. Thus, learning is unique to each individual. Furthermore, one needs to know that learning and memory are interdependent. Learning takes place because of memory and without memory you cannot learn.

Misconceptions about learning

The fact that everybody needs to know about how learning takes place is crucial in determining better results and how to overcome some common prejudices. Learning is not as simple as we think and it is much more than cramming. Teachers and parents make their students and children follow stringent studying habits without understanding the aspect of how learning takes place in children or humans in general. Learning is the result of memory and the process of learning depends on how the information in processed in the stages of our memory. The stages that makes memory is due to encoding, storing and retrieval. If we have learnt something then it is because there is a relative permanent change which has taken place in our behavior, mental processors and our perceptions about the concepts which is solely due to the result of our experience.

Stages of memory

What everybody needs to know is how the information is processed in our memory and how learning occurs in humans. The stages are as follows:

Stage 1: This is the first stage of memory and the information which we have perceived or seen is encoded for a brief period of time i.e. few seconds. This information must be either transferred immediately to short-term memory or else it is liable to be erased or ceased. This stage is called sensory information.

Stage 2: The second stage of memory lasts for 20 to 30 seconds. Some selective sensory information which is stored in our active memory or conscious mind is called as short-term memory. Most of the short-term memories are quickly forgotten, to locate them for future reference, one has to attend to this information so that this information moves to the next stage.

Stage 3: The final stage of memory refers to information which lies deep in our unconscious and can be retrieved whenever desired. It’s a stage where old information is replaced with new and the information stored here can be retrieved for a lifetime. It plays a vital role in learning without which our purpose wouldn’t be served. This stage is called long term memory. Information stored here is permanent.

Memory like music

Memory can be compared to music on your phone. If you watch a YouTube music video then it would be a sensory information for your phone. If you download a song and if it is in your playlist then it would be short term memory. Once the new songs are added, the old ones will be automatically moved from the playlist. If you keep playing the new songs many times, they will be on your phone as most played. Likewise, this is how memory works. The more you rehearse any information, the more you will be able to retrieve or recall the information later.

Goodbye to cramming

Now that you know how memory works and how learning takes place, you can get rid of your traditional ways of teaching or studying and say goodbye to all your prejudices about learning.  Cramming or rote learning entire night before the day of exam is not the right way to study. Doing this will only result in mental block or forgetting. Every time you sit for studying, remember that rehearsing the information you have learnt is very essential for learning to take place. This indicates that revising helps in recalling the information accurately. Only when the information is rehearsed in the short term memory, it will be transferred to the long term memory. When this happens we know that learning has taken place. Hence, practice is important so that your memory knows that this repeated information has a purpose and will be retrieved whenever you need it. So, your memory is like a field. The more you sow, the more you shall reap. Consequently, make your memory your good friend, as you’ll need its help for lifelong whenever needed.
